The Pacific

This is my latest obsession. It’s a good obsession. THE PACIFIC is a ten part miniseries airing on HBO on Sunday nights brought to you by the same production team who gave you Band of Brothers. I’m talking about Tom Hanks, Steven Spielberg and Gary Goetzman. Already three episodes in, I can honestly say this miniseries is more than epic. This miniseries is story telling at its best.

I often find that people of my generation think of the world wars and remember stories their grandparents would tell them. And when you look at your grandparents telling these stories you forget they were once young too. You forget how tough they must to have been to go through this time and survive. I feel so privileged to say that not only I could I not ever even imagine going through what they did but I’ve never even had to consider it and this is all because of the sacrifices they made whether they consciously decided to or were forced to.

When you watch this show you will see how these soldiers or rather boys, endured intolerable circumstances which ruined their souls all in the name of survival. Fighting to win was quickly disregarded the moment they realized they had been abandoned. This became a mission to live another second, another minute, another day. You think you're tough? No, you're not. Not until you've experienced what they have.

I’m so happy shows like this are made. I’m so happy the history of our past is not being lost. To know why we are here, we must first understand how we got here. The wins, the losses, the struggles, the inventions, the discoveries, each of these are a spec on the frame to create a whole picture of life.

THE PACIFIC tracks the intertwined real-life journeys of three U.S. Marines across the vast canvas of the Pacific Theater during World War II. The miniseries follows these men and their fellow Marines from their first battle with the Japanese on Guadalcanal, through the rain forests of Cape Gloucester and the strongholds of Peleliu, across the bloody sands of Iwo Jima and through the horror of Okinawa, and finally to their triumphant but uneasy return home after V-J Day.

If you enjoy war stories or if you are a history junkie then you will love this miniseries. You can check it out Sundays on HBO. Watch the trailer here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V3kQP2jSoa0&feature=fvst

“History is full of wars fought for a hundred reasons. But this war, our war, I want to believe, I have to believe that it’s all worthwhile because our cause is just.”
