Oh Holy Night

I needed to run an errand today and the place I was going to was at least 40 kilometers from my house. It’s a snowy, cold day here and I knew the poorly salted roads would result in a longer commute. I decided to take the Paul Potts CD with me to keep me company on my long drive today and I’m so happy I did. Do you remember Paul Potts? He was the guy who won Britain’s got talent a few years back. Great story, amazing singer…this guy has ‘it’. If you don’t know who I’m talking about, then grab a tissue and watch this youtube video:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1k08yxu57NA

Anyway, since I was feeling in the mood for a little Christmas music, I jumped ahead to the bonus Christmas tracks, the first one being Oh Holy Night. Paul’s performance in this song is hard to beat. You can feel the power in his voice and in the words of the song which represent the true meaning of Christmas which by the way is not the celebration of commercialism.

Naturally, the first thing I thought of was church, midnight mass actually. Christmas is made for me when the choir sings this song at midnight mass. There is something so pure and emotional, listening to the voices of undiscovered talents, particularly in a church. The way the sounds echo off the stone walls or the high ceilings has the power to make you feel connected to something…everything.

Paul singing this song made me think of my father who is an amazingly, beautiful and talented undiscovered singer, much like the people in a small town church choir. I guess I took his voice for granted my whole life, not really knowing that other people didn’t sing like him, but now I understand that my ears had been spoiled and because of him i can appreciate great music.

Here is the link to Paul Potts singing Oh Holy Night. Turn it up nice and loud and let yourself feel the power of the words and the volume of his voice. It’s beautifully moving and peaceful. It will remind you what Christmas is supposed to mean. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6aVDtapVnwo
