May I Recommend - Dear John

I have been trying to keep myself from writing this blog. The reason is because I haven’t finished the book yet but I can’t help it. I know, patience is something I need to work on. This book is too good not to tell everyone about it and I feel like I can’t wait to purge it on you. It’s probably better that I haven’t finished it because I won’t be able to give too much away. Must practice self control.

I started reading Dear John the other day and instantly fell in love with the two main characters. The story is written by Nicholas Sparks, the same guy that brought us the Notebook. I need to make a side note here. This is a dude author writing these horribly romantic love stories, like amazing love stories – do guys really think like this but they are too man to show it? Show us the romance boys. I guarantee you it will be worth it.

Anyway, back to the book. You read the story from John’s perspective…a rough around the edges US soldier on leave for 2 weeks visiting his dad (who raised him as a single parent) in North Carolina. The other main character is Savannah…a do gooder naive church girl building houses in North Carolina for Habitat for Humanity on her summer break from University. In those two weeks they meet and fall in love with each other (I know it seems crazy right? Falling in love in 2 weeks…crazier things have happened I’m sure) but the end is near as John must return to his base in Germany. There, I’m not going to give anything else away because you need to read it for yourselves, but I will tell you this – The love letters they write to each other (hand written by the way, none of this impersonal email stuff – so old fashioned, I love it) are so deep and personal and amazing that you will fall in love with your significant other all over again just by reading them. It brings you back to the time when you first fell in love. Love that transforms you in ways you didn't think were possible.

Every time I put the book down I want to pick it up again immediately. I’m desperate to see how it turns out but I’m sad too because I don’t’ want it to be over. Isn’t that always the way. At least I’ll be able to see it on the big screen in a few months. This book has been made into a movie and it stars Channing Tatum and Amanda Seyfried. Hits theaters in February. Here come the goose bumps!

Dear John is lovely, exciting, heartbreaking, gut wrenching and beautiful all at the same time. If you love a love story then pick up this book then tell me what you thought.

If you're wondering what the song is in the second half of the trailer it's "Set the Fire to the Third Bar" by Snow Patrol featuring Martha Wainwright.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w4P4CH2tV6I
Ahhh, so good!!!
