My Superficial Christmas Wish List

I know I’ve said this to so many people, but I’m not sure I’ve ever typed it. Just to cover the bases I’ll recap my thoughts on the whole Christmas gift giving thing.

Will and I don’t exchange gifts. Instead of buying multiple small presents for each other, we save the money to purchase bigger ticket items for the house or we save it for vacations. We are in the stage of our life known as the ‘building years.’ Furnishing a house is expensive man, therefore ‘want’ items get tossed to the bottom of the list and ‘need’ items become top priority.

Here is the second reason we don’t do the whole gift exchange. A few years ago we came to the realization that the exchange of material goods for specific holidays was baloney. I understand this isn’t the case for everyone. Some people really look forward to birthdays and holidays for the presents. People love presents, I totally get it. Awesome, love it,keep it up it's good for our economy. I on the other hand would prefer a bouquet of flowers or a surprise dinner reservation on an unassuming day other than a marketing, um I mean national holiday. I don’t know maybe I’m just fighting against the man, not wanting to conform to his ruling of when I need to buy stuff for people.

I’m not a Grinch at all. I really love Christmas. I love decorating the house and putting up the tree. I love baking Christmas cookies and watching all the movies on TV. I love going to midnight mass and visiting with family & friends sharing a drink or two while catching up on old times. What I’m most looking forward to this Christmas is hang out time with Will. Staying up late watching movies, spending lazy afternoon reading books and listening to music, simply enjoying each other’s company. Life is too busy, Christmas gives us a chance to chill out together with no agenda or expectations. Christmas gives us time with each other, which to me is the best gift I could ever get. Frig I can’t wait!

We are big fans of giving to others who may not be as fortunate as us which is the true spirit of giving anyway, isn’t it? Or have I been getting the wrong message all these years. I get so frustrated with the ‘buying for the sake of buying’ garbage we so often get wrapped up in. Let’s bring back the concept of ‘buying for those who need it’.

But with that said, it’s the thought that counts, right? Don’t get me wrong, I certainly would never turn down a gift, I just think we have let it get out of control. A single well thought out gift has the ability to mean so much more than a dozen gifts with no real purpose.

In the spirit of Christmas I thought I would type up my over the top, material wish list. These are all the things I’d ask for in no particular order, if my Secret Santa was uber rich.

  1. The Oscars would be cool. In our biggest dreams we should take each other and stare at Leonardo DiCaprio and pretend we are totally not star struck.
