Life Imitating Art

It seems to happen quite often and more so with the younger generation of actors. The cast of Gossip Girl has this one covered. You’ve got Penn & Blake, Ed & Jessica, Leighton & Sebastian. Well, if anything, it must be convenient. I’ve heard some people comparing the “Hollywood” scene to high school. Makes sense if you really think about it. When you’re on top of your game you’re usually paired up with others who are on top of their game. You work together, present at awards shows together, get asked to the same parties and events. The circles start getting pretty small and these people become your “friends”.

Some actors say that when you become a character for the length of the shoot, the process is so intense that at times, yes, maybe you do start to develop feelings for the person you are playing opposite and it may become hard to draw the line between reality and script. I mean hell, it’s your job to spend however many hours a day “pretending” that you are in love with the person. I’m sure it takes years to develop the ability to not become emotionally connected to the characters you play. In order to portray them I’m sure you have to in some way become them.

Then there is the whole “reaching super stardom together” thing. As in, you were nobodies yesterday, then your film broke records over opening weekend now teenage girls are desperate to have your babies and chase you down dark alleys for locks of your hair and the most mundane activities (like picking up dry cleaning) are reported as “news” in entertainment magazines. The only other people that can relate to you are those going through the same thing.

Anyway, there is a point to this blog. As you know, Glee is one of my favorite shows on TV. A couple of weeks ago this sighting popped up on the internet: http://justjared.buzznet.com/2009/10/17/lea-michele-casino-party-pretty/
At the time I had a feeling that they were more than just friends. Then this story came out today: http://perezhilton.com/2009-11-04-just-friends-4
Looks like I’m not the only one to think that “Finn & Rachel” oh wait I mean Cory and Lea are hooking up. I think they would be a great match. At this point I would consider them freshman at a new school. They are just getting their feet wet, trying to figure out where they belong and what clubs to join. They’re both fresh faces to the social scene but eventually they will go in different directions. It’s rare for high school romances to go beyond that...high school.
